Cefoperazone/sulbactam is a combination antibiotic medication used to treat various bacterial infections. It combines two active ingredients: cefoperazone, a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic, and sulbactam, a beta-lactamase inhibitor.

Cefoperazone/sulbactam is primarily used to treat infections caused by susceptible bacteria, especially those that are resistant to other antibiotics. It is often employed for serious infections such as respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, intra-abdominal infections, and septicemia.

The cefoperazone component of the medication works by inhibiting the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall, leading to the disruption of the bacterial cell structure and ultimately causing bacterial death. Sulbactam, on the other hand, acts as a beta-lactamase inhibitor, preventing certain enzymes produced by bacteria from inactivating the cefoperazone. This combination enhances the effectiveness of the antibiotic against a broader range of bacteria.
