FC EXA-IV

Ferric Carboxymaltose 500mg/10 ml

Mode of Action

  • Intravenous administration of ferric carboxymaltose results in transient elevations in serum iron, serum ferritin and transferrin saturation, and, ultimately, in the correction of haemoglobin levels and replenishment of depleted iron stores.

Dosage

  • For patients weighing 50 kg or more, the recommended dosage is FC EXA-IV 750 mg intravenously in two doses separated by at least 7 days for a total cumulative dose of 1,500 mg of iron per course. Alternatively, for patients weighing 50 kg or more, FC EXA-IV 15 mg/kg to a maximum of 1,000 mg may be administered as a single-dose treatment course.
  • For patients weighing less than 50 kg, the recommended dosage is FC EXA-IV 15 mg/kg body weight intravenously in two doses separated by at least 7 days per course.
  • FC EXA-IV treatment may be repeated if iron deficiency anemia reoccurs.

Description

Ferric carboxymaltose is an iron replacement product that is used in adults used to treat iron deficiency anemia (IDA), which is low red blood cells caused by a lack of iron in the body.

Ferric carboxymaltose is given to adults with IDA and chronic kidney disease (not on dialysis), or to adults with IDA when iron taken by mouth is not effective.

Ferric carboxymaltose may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.
