Imiful-500
Imipenem 500mg + cilastatin 500mg IV Injection
Imipenem-cilastatin is a combination medication used in the treatment of severe bacterial infections. It consists of two active ingredients: imipenem and cilastatin.
Imipenem belongs to a class of antibiotics called carbapenems. It works by inhibiting the growth of bacteria and disrupting the synthesis of their cell walls, leading to the destruction of the bacteria. Imipenem is effective against a wide range of bacteria, including both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.
Cilastatin is a renal dehydropeptidase inhibitor. It is combined with imipenem to prevent the breakdown of imipenem by enzymes in the kidneys. Cilastatin helps to maintain higher levels of imipenem in the body, allowing for a longer duration of action and improved efficacy.
Imipenem-cilastatin is commonly used to treat serious infections caused by multidrug-resistant bacteria, such as complicated urinary tract infections, intra-abdominal infections, skin and soft tissue infections, pneumonia, and septicemia. It is usually administered intravenously in a hospital setting under the supervision of a healthcare professional.
As with any medication, imipenem-cilastatin may have side effects. Common side effects can include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, rash, and local irritation at the injection site. Rare but serious side effects may include allergic reactions, seizures, and kidney problems.
