Description
Mendytam-IV
Levetiracetam 100 mg /mg 5 ml Injection
Introduction
Levetiracetam Injection is an antiepileptic (anticonvulsant) medication used to treat seizures. It is available as a 100 mg/mL solution, typically provided in 5 mL vials. This form is used when oral administration is not possible, such as in emergency settings or during surgery.
Mode of Action
Levetiracetam works by:
- Binding to synaptic vesicle protein 2A (SV2A) in the brain.
- This modulates neurotransmitter release and reduces neuronal excitability.
- It helps to stabilize nerve activity, thereby preventing seizures.
Unlike many other antiepileptic drugs, it does not affect GABA or glutamate receptors directly.
Indications:
- Partial-onset seizures (≥1 month old)
- Myoclonic seizures
- Generalized tonic-clonic seizures
- Status epilepticus (off-label)
- Temporary oral replacement
Doses:
✅ Adults: 500–1500 mg IV every 12 hrs (infuse over 15 min)
✅ Children (4–15 yrs): 10–30 mg/kg every 12 hrs (Max 60 mg/kg/day)
✅ Infants (1 mo–<4 yrs): 7–21 mg/kg every 12 hrs
